About the Artist

jane Lorraine Huson

Art has always been a way for me to express gratitude for the privilege of living in stunning landscapes. Having lived in Ontario, Alberta and currently Nova Scotia, these places hold snapshots of heart stopping wildness and beauty. Each geographical area is home to a huge diversity of gorgeous wild creatures, and this has been the genesis of what I choose to talk about through my work.

From an early age I have loved drawing animals, a passion encouraged by my Grandma Georgina Lorraine Huson, and one that inevitably led me to complete a fine arts program at Georgian College in Ontario. I later went on to complete further studies in Alberta, graduating with my Bachelor of Education degree. I was offered a teaching job with the Lethbridge School District and remained there as an art teacher for 25 years. In that time I worked alongside many generous, knowledgeable and caring administrators, teachers and support staff but the most memorable to me were the students. Days in the classroom were filled with laughter, heartbreak, challenges, celebrations and some of the most creative young people I have ever met. It was a magical career that I will be forever grateful for.

Leaving Alberta was a difficult decision but the ocean was calling my name. Actually it was screaming. Through a series of explorations and chance, my partner Don Groft and I settled on an oceanside acreage outside the village of Lockeport on the south shore of Nova Scotia. It is here in retirement that I have been able to explore, play and discover various media and themes all while sharing this land and its wild beauty with the animals that are central to my work.
